The Ultimate Quick Island Escape: Koh Hey

Known locally as Koh Hey, Coral Island is a stunning sanctuary situated just 9 kilometers off the southeast coast of Phuket. This accessibility makes it one of the most popular day-trip destinations for those looking to swap the hustle of the mainland for pristine tropical shores without spending hours on a boat. The island features two main beaches: Long Beach and Banana Beach, both of which are protected by extensive coral reefs that teem with multi-colored parrotfish, sergeant majors, and even the occasional sea turtle. Whether you are looking to lounge under a thatched umbrella with a coconut in hand or dive into adrenaline-pumping activities like parasailing, sea walking, or banana boat rides, Coral Island offers a versatile itinerary that caters to luxury travelers and budget-conscious adventurers alike.

Planning

Historical Context

Originally a quiet fishing outpost, Koh Hey transformed into a tourism hotspot in the late 1980s as Phuket's popularity grew, eventually becoming the premier spot for day-trip watersports.

Photography Tips

  • Use a circular polarizer filter to cut water glare
  • Golden hour (4 PM - 5 PM) is best for beach portraits
  • Underwater housing or a GoPro is essential for snorkeling shots
  • Wide-angle lenses help capture the scale of the beaches

Insider Tips

  • Go for the early morning departure to beat the midday crowds
  • The far right end of Long Beach has the best natural shade
  • Keep an eye on the trees at Banana Beach for the famous Hornbills
  • Try 'Sea Walking' if you want to see the fish without getting your hair wet

Our Partners

  • In partnership with Viator and leading local Phuket tour operators.

Fun Facts

  • Coral Island is one of the few places near Phuket where you can see the Great Hornbill in the wild.
  • The island is so close that you can see the Phuket Big Buddha from the shore of Long Beach.
  • It is called 'Coral Island' because of the massive variety of coral species surrounding its perimeter.

Cancellation Policy

Most tours offer a 100% refund if canceled at least 24 hours before the departure time. Weather-related cancellations by the operator will result in a full refund or a rescheduled date.

Perfect Day Trip

The speedboat ride was so fast, only about 15 minutes! We spent the whole day at Banana Beach. The snorkeling was surprisingly good right off the shore. Highly recommend booking the buffet lunch option.

Beautiful but Busy

The island is stunning, truly like a postcard. It can get a bit crowded around midday when all the tours arrive, but if you walk to the ends of the beach, it's very peaceful. The water is incredibly clear.

Great for Kids

Took my two young children and they loved the 'fish feeding' experience. The water is shallow and calm, perfect for them to splash around safely. Our guide through the platform was excellent and very attentive.

Luxury Catamaran was Worth It

We booked the sunset dinner catamaran. It was much more relaxed than the speedboat. The food was delicious and the view of Promthep Cape from the water was the highlight of our Phuket trip.

Private Longtail Experience

We chose a private boat for our family. It gave us the flexibility to stay longer at the quiet spots. The coral reefs are very close to the beach which was great for the elders in our group.

Amazing Value

For the price, you can't beat this. We saw so many tropical fish. It's much better than the beaches on the mainland. A must-do when visiting Phuket.

Great Snorkeling

The variety of fish was amazing. We even saw a Hornbill bird in the trees near the restaurant. Make sure to bring reef-safe sunscreen!
